GRP Anti-Slip Stair Tread, Landing Cover, Nosing & flat sheet

    Safety

When installing Stop Slip GRP products, standard personal protective equipment should be worn as a minimum. These include 3M dust mask (or similar), safety goggles, heavy duty gloves and overalls. They should be cut in a well ventilated area or close to extraction points. Dust residue can be disposed of using normal waste disposal methods.

    Preparation

Before fitting check that the area is clean, dry, and free from any loose and defective material. Any pitted or damaged areas should be locally repaired to provide a flat and even surface. Dry-fit the stair tread, landing cover, flat sheet or nosing to ensure a comfortable fit, and to ensure that they sit flat to the surface. If any localised trimming is required, we recommend the use of a Jigsaw, preferably fitted with a tungsten carbide blade (Bosch T141 HM or similar) or a diamond cutting disc fitted to an angle grinder.

Stair tread covers, landing covers, flat sheets and nosing can be cut to your required dimensions, with fixing points, pre-drilled and counter-sunk prior to despatch (at extra cost). Exact dimensions should be supplied at time of order.

Drill the fixing locating holes in all the panels. Whilst individual circumstances will vary, the following should be used as a guide only:

    Stair Tread Covers

Drill two holes on each side of the Stop Slip Stair Tread. The first hole should be around 50mm in from the back edge, on the left hand side of the stair tread cover. The second hole should be drilled 50mm in from the side, parallel to the yellow hazard strip. Repeat for the right hand side of the tread. Additional fixings can be applied if necessary at 600mm centres for larger treads. Handy hint: Use the first drilled tread cover as a template, thereby ensuring conformity for drilling the rest of the panels.

    Stair Tread Nosings

Fixing points required at approximately 600mm centres.

GRP Anti Slip Landing Covers & Flat Sheets

All fixing points to be approximately 15mm inboard from the edge, & at 600mm centres. Additional fixings down the middle of the panel, again at 600mm centres will ensure a smoother fit to the substrate.

    Fitting the Panels

Whilst mechanical fixings are all that is required to secure Stop Slip GRP anti slip products, we recommend the application of an appropriate high strength gap filling adhesive (PU230 or similar) as this will provide the following benefits:

    1. A secondary fixing in the event that the mechanical fixings should fail.
    2. A barrier against the 'drumming' noise that is created when fitting a cover over the existing substrate.

When applying the gap filling adhesive, first run a 6mm bead around the perimeter of the panel, and then horizontally across the panel at approximately 200 - 250mm centres. The stair tread cover, nosing, flat sheet or landing cover should then be placed immediately onto the substrate, to ensure adequate transfer of the adhesive. A firm bond will be achieved in about one hour under normal circumstances and conditions. Secure with the mechanical fixings and allow the adhesive to cure for 12-24 hours before allowing excessive traffic to use the areas.

Recommended Mechanical Fixings For Fitting Over The Following Surfaces

    • Timber - 30mm x 5mm BZP or Stainless Steel Screws
    • Steel Chequer Plate - No 8 x 20mm Self tapping pan head pozi A4 stainless steel, or BZP screws.
    • Concrete - 30mm x 5mm BZP or A4 Stainless Steel Impact anchors (Domed head)
    • Open Mesh Grating - Stainless Steel 'M' Saddle Clips with domed headed or counter sunk bolts to suit the appropriate grating thickness, and a 50 x 50mm square washer.
    • High Strength Gap filling Adhesive Coverage Guide.

As a guide only, 1 X 310mm tube of adhesive should under normal circumstances be enough to fit the following items:

    • 5 No. 600mm Tread Covers or 3 No. 1000mm Tread Covers or 2 No. 1500mm Tread Covers
    • 2 No. 1220 x 1220mm or 1 No. 2440 x 1220mm Landing Covers
    • 12 No.1000mm or 8 No. 1500mm Lengths of Stair Nosing

    Cleaning & Maintenance

In order to maintain the effectiveness of the grit surface with regard to slip resistance, it is very important that the top surface is kept clean. Individual circumstances will vary but, generally a stiff hand brush and hot soapy water will achieve good results. Mild detergents can be used safely on the product but it is advisable to test any cleaning products first.

Where circumstances allow our fibreglass products can be power washed without causing harm. Care should be taken when the product has been stuck down and / or edge sealed as very high-pressure power washing or repeated power washing could cause damage to sealants and adhesives.

General Maintenance & Regular Safety Checks

The security of the fixings/adhesive should be checked on a regular basis. Circumstances will vary, based upon the volume of foot traffic etc. but, as a guide, monthly inspections would be advisable.
